GPPi and Brookings co-organize conference on transatlantic energy governance in DC
On 21-22 October 2010, GPPi and the Brookings Institution are co-organizing the 8th Transatlantic Energy Governance Conference in Washington, D.C. The meeting will address Transatlantic Energy Strategies and Resources Nationalism. The conference is part of a two-year research and dialogue project on transatlantic energy governance supported by the European Union Delegation to the United States.
Building upon GPPi’s Transatlantic Energy Security Dialogue series, the joint program has established itself over more than three years as a forum for balanced and authoritative discussion on the key energy security issues confronting Europe and the United States. The goal of the conference is to foster the kind of constructive and forward-looking transatlantic dialogue on energy security issues that would move forward transatlantic policy debates by bringing together representatives from governments, NGOs, business, the media, think tanks and universities.
The two-day event will address some of the most pressing challenges in transatlantic energy security, including the impact of shale and natural gas, Russia’s energy policy and pipeline politics, the new European frontiers of nuclear power and electricity, and environmental considerations.
Some of the confirmed speakers include:
Vaclav Bartuska, Ambassador-at-Large for Energy Security for the Czech Republic; Jonathan Elkind, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and International Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy; David Goldwyn, Coordinator for International Energy Affairs at the U.S. Department of State; Thane Gustafson, Senior Director of Russian and Caspian Energy at HIS CERA and Professor at Georgetown University; Henry Lee, Director of the Environment and Natural Resources Program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government; Steven LeVine, Contributing Editor at Foreign Policy magazine; Piotr Szymanski, Director for Nuclear Safeguards at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy; and Mirek Topolanek, former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic.
